Van Alen Book Club:
The Image of the City
by Kevin Lynch

This event is sold out. To be added to the waiting list, contact Steven Thomson: sthomson@vanalen.org.

As we continue to explore how the built environment affects us in mind and body, February’s Van Alen Book Club will discuss Kevin Lynch’s 1960 classic The Image of the City. Join us for a conversation about how Lynch’s ideas about mental mapping and the ways we perceive cities continue to resonate today.

Registration is open to new and former participants of the Van Alen Book Club. We’ll continue our tradition of providing drinks and a light dinner.

Visit the MIT Press website to order the book directly through the publisher.

June Williamson, associate professor of architecture at the City College of New York / CUNY, will lead the discussion. Williamson is author of Designing Suburban Futures (Island Press, 2013) and co-author of Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs (Wiley, 2009, updated 2011). For Long Island’s Rauch Foundation she organized the Build a Better Burb: Be Bold (2010) and ParkingPLUS (2013-14) design competitions and was recently a member of the winning team in Van Alen’s National Parks Now competition, designing for Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park (definitely worth a visit!).

Williamson studied architecture and urban design at Yale, MIT, and City College and has practiced and taught architecture and urban design in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Boston, and New York.
