In this memoir, Broom invites us into her family’s New Orleans home and shows us, through their collective story, a city still grappling with the legacy of Hurricane Katrina and the injustices suffered by its native black people.

Our discussion will be moderated by Bryan C. Lee.
Bryan is an Architect, educator, writer, and Design Justice Advocate. He is the founder/Design Director of Colloqate Design a nonprofit multidisciplinary design practice, in New Orleans, Louisiana, dedicated to expanding community access to design and creating spaces of racial, social, and cultural justice. He has led two award-winning youth design programs nationwide and is the founding co-organizer of the DAP Collective organizing design activist in the design justice movement. He was most recently noted as one of the 2018 Fast Company Most Creative People in Business, a USC Annenberg MacArthur Civic Media Fellow, and the youngest design firm to win the Architectural League’s Emerging Voices award in 2019.

Van Alen Book Club
Van Alen Book Club meets the last Tuesday of every month (except December) in our street-level space. Our discussions, moderated by some of our favorite urbanists, use the urban experience in fiction and non-fiction as a springboard to ask how we experience cities, and how we want to make them in the future. Meetings are open to all, and include pizza, wine, and beer.
