As economic inequality grows, the role of real estate development, finance, and extreme wealth in shaping our city falls under even greater scrutiny. Join us for a discussion of Capital City: Gentrification and the Real Estate State by Sam Stein. Stein explains how city planners have contributed to inequality, gentrification, and displacement, and looks for ways the profession can serve cities better.

About the moderator
Samuel Stein is a geography PhD candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center. His work focuses on the politics of urban planning, with an emphasis on housing, labor, real estate, and gentrification in New York City. In 2019, Verso published his first book, Capital City: Gentrification and the Real Estate State.

Van Alen Book Club
Van Alen Book Club meets the last Tuesday of every month (except December) in our street-level space. Our discussions, moderated by some of our favorite urbanists, use the urban experience in fiction and non-fiction as a springboard to ask how we experience cities, and how we want to make them in the future. Meetings are open to all, and include pizza, wine, and beer.
