Elissa Black has served as Van Alen’s Managing Director since 2017. As an arts manager and attorney, Elissa has over thirteen years’ experience leading New York-based non-profit arts and cultural organizations in the areas of organizational management, strategy, capacity building, board development, finances and resourcing, program development and evaluation.
Prior to joining Van Alen, Elissa led project management of the Guggenheim Museum’s largest and most innovative international cultural initiatives, working with artists, curators, cultural organizations and partners in Asia, Europe and the Americas to realize complex and multifaceted projects across the globe.
Elissa is a graduate of the Teachers College, Columbia University master program in arts management, and was previously an adjunct professor in that program teaching fundraising and organizational sustainability. Elissa also holds a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Fine Arts Critical Theory) and Bachelor of Laws (Juris Doctor) from the University of Sydney, Australia.
