Crossroads Conversations
Public Discourse

What would it be like to candidly talk to a person with differing views?  We found a divided nation following the 2016 election, and as a response, Van Alen Institute invited people from all walks of life and political convictions to join Crossroads Conversations on the Red Steps in Times Square. Van Alen hosted the competition that led to the creation of the Red Steps at one of the world’s busiest crossroads.

Participants registered in a brief moderated conversation with a stranger, or wore headphones to listen in on the live dialogue. Crossroads Conversations offered a chance to engage others thoughtfully in an iconic public space.

Crossroads Conversations was offered at two times:

Midday Conversation
Thursday, Dec. 8
12PM–1PM

Evening Conversation
Thursday, Dec. 8
5PM–6PM

This event was free and open to the public. Event was presented with Times Square Arts.
