Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue tells the story of Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant who has come to New York to seek a better life, but sees his hopes frustrated by the collapse of Lehman Brothers and financial crisis of 2007-2008. As Jende’s outlook shifts with his changing fortunes and hardships, the novel offers a window into the immigrant experience in America while also illuminating the things that make people truly happy.
