Catherine Green is the Founder and Executive Director of ARTs East New York Inc, (AENY). Established in 2009, AENY serves a growing, diverse community of over 100,000 residents and is the only community based organization in the East New York area focused exclusively on providing access to the arts as a tool for Social and Economic change. Green’s efforts with AENY’s ReNew Lots Market and Artist Incubator initiative have been nationally and internationally recognized for its “Lighter, Quicker and Cheaper” approach to development by transforming vacant lots into public spaces using shipping containers as a means to provide local artists free studio space and neighborhood entrepreneurs low-cost storefront opportunities. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, this models innovative approach to economic development using arts and cultural at it’s core is developed with community member participation in planning. Additionally, Green sits on the board of the BMS Brownsville Family Health Center; Co-chairs the EBACA East Brooklyn Arts and Cultural Alliance; is a steering committee member of the Coalition for the Advancement of ENY and Cypress Hills (an organization opposed to displacement of gentrification) and was recently appointed to the NYC Cultural Plan Advisory Committee. Green who is also a mother of 3 beautiful budding artists is committed to providing access to arts and equity to ALL children and residents within the East New York community.
